By the time Christ hung on the cross,
He had gone without water for at least nine hours.
He endured a long night of interrogations.
In the morning, He was scourged and whipped repeatedly,
losing much fluid from His body.
He was then forced to carry the heavy cross through the streets,
His sweat mingling with blood that ran down His torn back.
He must have been severely dehydrated—
overwhelmingly thirsty.
Yet, even in that abyss of physical agony,
Christ remained fixed on obedience.
Pain did not distract Him from the will of God;
it became the very place where Scripture was fulfilled.
From the cross, He uttered, “I thirst.”
It wasn't just a primal human need.
It was an intentional act to fulfill the Scripture.
"After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst". Jn 19:28
How do we hold onto the Word when our physical desires stage a revolt, and every nerve ending is clamouring for immediate gratification?
How can the soul choose obedience when the raw, heavy weight of physical longing threatens to overwhelm our spiritual resolve?
How do we overcome the simple, heavy inertia of the body—like the lethargy that pulls us away from morning prayer and devotion?
I am reminded of Paul’s words:
“I discipline my body and keep it under control.” (1 Cor 9:27)
Not as self-denial for its own sake,
but so that the body might serve the will of God.
In context, Paul was referencing to how runners, athletes and boxers would buffet their physical bodies, put them into rigorous exercise and diet regimes, and push them to their limits just so to obtain a temporary trophy.
This means it is possible.
A disciple of Christ need not be enslaved to bodily appetite, comfort, or craving.
Our physical bodies, with all their demands, need not sabotage God’s purposes. They can be submitted, redeemed, and perfectly aligned with His will.
Christ, the Son of Man, didn't just endure His body; He mastered it.
He didn't let its longings derail His mission.
Instead, He intricately wove those very longings
into the fabric of fulfilling Scripture.
As I gaze upon Christ who thirsted on the cross,
I hear His gentle summons:
"Come. Learn from Me.
You too can discipline your physical body
so that it will not hinder
but serve My will"
Lord Jesus,
teach me this spiritual exercise.
Train my body to serve Your purposes,
and my soul to trust You,
even when I thirst.
Amen.
